Destiny wants us to win again: du Plessis

CSK batsman hopes his team makes the most of their fortune and defends title

When the Royal Challengers Bangalore were chasing a modest 133 against the beleaguered Deccan Chargers, the Chennai Super Kings turned from cricketers to fans for a day. Crammed in a hotel room, they cheered their hearts out for the Chargers. There was pandemonium in the room and emotions flowing in abundance. The sharp brains that plot the demise of their opponents on the cricket field, gave in to superstitions. Coach, Stephen Fleming, was shut out of the team room because the players thought he brought ill luck for the Chargers.

In the end, CSK got what they were desperately hoping for – a very unlikely DC victory and with it a berth in the playoffs of IPL 2012. They now play the eliminator against the Mumbai Indians in Bengaluru.

Ahead of the knockout game, iplt20.com caught up with CSK’s highest run-getter in the tournament, Faf du Plessis. The amicable South African admitted the team was “very lucky” to still be in the tournament and said it’s now imperative for them to make the most of their fortune and lift the trophy for the third time. He revelled in the fact that it was two South Africans – Dale Steyn and JP Duminy from DC – who knocked RCB out to give CSK a playoff spot.

Does the team consider itself fortunate to be here?

Very lucky, to be honest. I did not think it would be possible for us to get through. When it is one result going in your favour, it is asking for a lot; but to have three results going in your favour, it is next to impossible.

Destiny wants you to win the third IPL in a row.

Well, that’s what we are thinking now because we shouldn’t be here but we are here. You have to think that someone is on our side to push us to get another trophy.

Did the team watch the DC v RCB match closely?

We were watching all three games. We were watching the RR game, which they lost and we were cheering for MI – which we never do – and then, the RCB one. To be honest with you, I saw the first two matches, but the third one I just said, “I don’t see DC beating the powerhouse that RCB has”. The previous day, Albie [Morkel] and I had sent out a Tweet to Dale Steyn saying “Please do us a favour and just get some early wickets,” and he was just unbelievable. He took three wickets for eight runs. Another South African, JP Duminy, too scored big runs. It was the two South Africans who came to the party to see CSK through.

We heard that the team had sent coach Stephen Fleming out of the room during that match?

Yeah, it was really funny. The whole team was sitting there and cheering. Fleming went out and RCB started to struggle. He returned after while to join the whole hype of watching the game. As he entered the room, everyone shouted, “Get out” and he was like “I don’t know why should I get out”. He went to his room and things started to go well for DC again. He tried to come in once again, but we denied him entry into the room. He was only allowed in when the last ball was bowled.

CSK has lost both their league matches to MI. Will that play on your minds?

No. In fact, I think something that CSK has done very well as compared to MI is crossing the final hurdle. MI has been fantastic always in the round robin, but sometimes they haven’t gone past the knockout stage. We have been there, we have done it and we know how to do it. So, for us the important thing now is to understand that everything that has happened up till now is gone. The inconsistency is gone. In the past, we have been the better side in the big games, so that’s what matters in this game.

What is the biggest threat from MI?

To have someone like [Lasith] Malinga is a great boost. He plays a key role in the bowling department and how we play him is going to be very important. He has done well in the matches against CSK. They have got good finishers and so do we; the only difference between the two teams is Malinga, who’s the best T20 bowler in the world. For us, [Ben] Hilfenhaus has been doing well with the new ball, which is something we lacked until he came. That adds strength to our team.

CSK’s game in Bengaluru was washed out, whereas MI beat RCB here. Will they have better knowledge of the conditions?

It is a really good wicket and we have got a really strong batting line-up. It was unfortunate that we missed out on the game because of the rains. There is a true bounce on the wicket, which the batsmen will relish. Hopefully, our powerhouse batting will put some runs on the board.

Hilfenhaus and Michael Hussey have put you on the brink. What do you think are your chances of getting a game?

That’s up to the selectors. I was sick for two games; I had bad viral fever. That created a chance for Michael to come back in to the setup and he has done well. Now, it’s a difficult one for the selectors, because I have been doing really well and so is Hussey. Luckily, I don’t have to make that decision.

But it’s not easy to leave out your highest run-scorer of the season.

That’s the theory. In the previous game, they went for Michael and the thinking behind that was that he has been doing well and I was sick and 90 percent fit. Now, I am back to 100 percent and I obviously want to play. But it’s up to Fleming and MS [Dhoni] and what they think will be the best team on that day.

Report: Eliminator - MI v CSK

CSK beat MI by 38 runs; face DD in second qualifier in Chennai

The Chennai Super Kings, who had scraped through the league phase to claim a berth in the final four, beat the Mumbai Indians at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium to keep their hopes of reclaiming the IPL trophy alive. The defending champions beat the 2011 CLT20 champions by a convincing margin of 38 runs.

Leading from the front, MS Dhoni played his best knock of the tournament, while Dwayne Bravo contributed with the bat and the ball to take his team into the second qualifier where they will play the Delhi Daredevils at home.

Chasing 188 to win, Sachin Tendulkar (11) and Dwayne Smith (38) continued from where they had left off in Jaipur. The West Indies batsman attacked from the word go and helped his team to a great start. MI were cruising until Tendulkar returned to the dugout ending the 47-run opening partnership; He was run-out while trying to make an improbable run. Smith followed him back an over later as he was caught by Ravindra Jadeja off Shadab Jakati.

It was all downhill for MI from there on. Albie Morkel removed Dinesh Karthik (6) bringing out James Franklin to join Rohit Sharma. With the asking rate climbing up, MI were under pressure when Sharma (14) departed after edging Morkel to the wicketkeeper leaving his team at 77 for four. Amabati Rayudu (11) was the next to walk back. The middle-order bat hit R Ashwin straight to Murali Vijay at deep mid-wicket. A while later, Dwayne Bravo dismissed Franklin (13). And when Suresh Raina took a brilliant catch to send back Harbhajan Singh (1) off Hilfenhaus, MI needed 76 runs off 30 balls with three wickets in hand. With Kieron Pollard’s (16) mishit off Bravo caught safely by Raina, MI had reached the end of the road. The Mumbai franchise could only manage 149 for nine in their 20 overs.

Earlier, upon opting to bowl first, Harbhajan Singh and Dhawal Kulkarni got the Mumbai Indians off to a good start. While the skipper conceded only one run in the first over, the Kulkarni claimed two off two in the second over. But MI failed to cash in on the early breakthroughs as S Badrinath rescued the CSK innings with 94-run partnership with Michael Hussey. The No. 4 batsman sent Kulkarni twice to the boundary.

Hussey, who had taken nine balls to get off the mark, joined Badrinath in shaping the innings, and the duo kept the scoreboard ticking. Badrinath (47) fell short of well deserved half-century as he took the aerial route and found the safe hands of Pollard.

Dhoni, who replaced him at the crease, made his intent clear form the outset. Although a brilliant catch by Kulkarni at the fence saw Hussey return to pavilion for 49, the CSK skipper continued to hit the ball hard. He sent Franklin over the long-on fence for the longest six (112 meters) of IPL 2012 in the same over.

After being brought back into the attack, Kulkarni dismissed Jadeja (1) off the first ball. However, building on the diligent work of Badrinath and Hussey, Dhoni slammed Kulkarni for three consecutive boundaries. Joining the party, Bravo too hammered the MI bowlers all over the park. There was no stopping Dhoni (50*), who raced to his first half-century of the season off just 20 balls that too on the last ball of the innings. His knock included two sixes and six fours, while Bravo’s 14-ball 33-run cameo was peppered with three fours and two sixes. With an unbroken 73-run stand, the duo took CSK to 187 for the loss of five wickets.

Man-of-the-Match: MS Dhoni for his quick fire 51 off 20 balls, which included six fours and two sixes

MI fined for slow over rate

Mumbai Indians

Harbhajan reported for second time in 2012 season

Media Advisory

The Mumbai Indians team have been fined after they maintained a slow over rate during this evening's DLF IPL match against Chennai Super Kings at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium.

At the end of the match, Mumbai Indians were assessed to be two overs behind the required rate after allowances were taken into consideration.

As this was captain Harbhajan Singh’s second slow over rate offence of the IPL season, he was fined US$40,000. Each of the other ten members of the Mumbai Indians playing XI was fined the lesser of US$10,000 or 25% of his match fee.

We knew we could target Dhawal: Bravo

CSK all-rounder says his team went after the MI pacer despite his early breakthroughs

Dwayne Bravo best reflected the mood in the Chennai Super Kings camp. The all-rounder was all smiles and overcome with joy as the defending champions thrashed the Mumbai Indians in the eliminator of the DLF IPL 2012 Playoffs. It wasn’t an easy win for CSK, though. They had been forced on the back foot by a double-strike from Dhawal Kulkarni in just the second over of the match. However, Subramaniam Badrinath and Michael Hussey put on a 94-run stand for the third wicket to dig CSK out of that hole. After that, MS Dhoni and Dwayne Bravo thrashed the MI bowlers, Kulkarni included, at the end of the innings to power the team to a match-winning score of 187.

iplt20.com caught up with Bravo for an exclusive chat following the 38-run victory posted by CSK.

A terrific win for CSK, coming back to score 187 after being reduced to two for one early on. Your thoughts on that?

Obviously. This game was a must-win game; if we lost we were out and that was it. Mumbai [Indians] are a very good team. They had us on the back foot up front, but we bat fairly deep. We have a lot of experience. So we backed ourselves, myself and the captain [MS Dhoni]. We said once we bat the 20 overs, obviously, we will get a good total, which we can defend.

Where did MI bowlers go wrong because even after the initial breakthroughs they had kept you down to 61 in the first 10 overs?

It was not where they bowled wrong. You have to give to credit to the way Mahi [MS Dhoni] batted. Hussey in the middle there, Badrinath and then obviously myself coming in at the end. We just backed ourselves. We knew [Lasith] Malinga was a key bowler, so we didn’t try to be aggressive with him and lose our wickets. We tried to target the other bowlers. Obviously, Dhawal bowled well upfront with the new ball, but he is very inexperienced. We knew we could take him down, target him and get a total that we could defend.

You spoke about Badrinath. One gets the feeling that he is CSK’s go-to-man when the side is in trouble?

It’s always good to have someone like him on the team. If you look at our team, we are very flexible. Badrinath is our floater in the team. We set the batting order according to how the game is going. We need to give credit to Mahi and the coaching staff for that.

You play the Delhi Daredevils next on May 25. What do you make of them?
Another good game, another fantastic team. We are looking forward to playing at home. Hopefully, we can get another win and go through to the finals.

Is the thought of winning three successive IPL titles playing on your mind?

We’re just enjoying our game, playing free and enjoying the challenge ahead of us.

Quick Stats: Match 72 - RR v MI

MI try their eighth; Tait bowls six; RR suffer their first;

1 The Rajasthan Royals suffered a defeat for the first time after making 160-plus runs in the first innings of the match.

3 Number of batsmen to aggregate 2,000 runs in the IPL. Sachin Tendulkar joined Suresh Raina and Gautam Gambhir on this list.

5 Number of times a side has registered a 10-wicket win in IPL. The 163-run target is the highest chased by any side in IPL without losing a wicket.

6
Number of wides sent down by Shaun Tait – the most by any bowler in a match in IPL 2012. In fact, this also equalled the record of most wides bowled by a bowler in an IPL match. Interestingly, Tait has now done this on two occasions. The other occasion was also against the Mumbai Indians in IPL 2010. Shane Harwood and Lasith Malinga are the other bowlers to have sent down six wides in a match, both in IPL 2009.

8
Number of opening pairs used by the Mumbai Indians in IPL 2012 – the most by any side along with the Pune Warriors India.

163
The first wicket unbroken partnership between Sachin Tendulkar and Dwayne Smith – this is the highest opening stand in the IPL. The pair obliterated the 159-run stand between Michael Hussey and Murali Vijay for the Chennai Super Kings against the Royal Challengers Bangalore last year.

Report: Match 72 - RR v MI

Prior to the last league match of IPL 2012, the Rajasthan Royals had never lost a match in which they scored 160 or more while batting first. The Mumbai Indians shattered that record by registering a thumping 10-wicket win at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium. MI successfully chased the 163-run target with two overs to spare.

The game had very little but pride at stake as MI had already made it to the top four, while RR were already out of playoff contention. The visitors looked to go into the playoffs with momentum on their side and the hosts just wanted to end the season on a high note. In the end, it was the stronger team that prevailed.

In what came across as their attempt to use the most number of opening pairs in a single tournament, the Mumbai Indians came up with yet another opening combination – Sachin Tendulkar and Dwayne Smith. The two ended up with the best opening partnership of IPL 2012 as they piled on 163 runs. The Tendulkar-Smith duo lived an extremely charmed in the middle. They kept playing wrong shots in the air and the ball kept falling short of the fielders. To double up the frustration of RR bowlers, the fielders leaked some runs on the ground as well.

When Sidharth Trivedi finally got Smith caught in the deep, it turned out to be a no-ball. Tendulkar smacked the next delivery, a free-hit, for a six to bring up MI’s 100. As the two batsmen rode their luck to the fullest, the hosts could do very little apart from grinning and bearing it.

After playing some chancy shots in the beginning, both batsmen settled down nicely and began to hit the ball well. Tendulkar scored 58* off 51 balls with the help of six fours, while Smith finished with 87* off 54 deliveries. He hit 10 fours and three sixes. MI got home with 12 balls to spare and all 10 wickets in hand.

Earlier, Rahul Dravid had called it right at the toss and elected to bat first. MI’s Dhawal Kulkarni was playing his first game of IPL 2012 and he accounted for the most successful opening pair of the season. In his first over, he dismissed Rahul Dravid (5) with a short and side delivery was edged to the ‘keeper. In his third over, he got rid of the in-form Ajinkya Rahane (13) with another short ball.

MI’s captain, however, was not that effective. Harbhajan Singh was smacked for 30 runs off his first two overs. Stuart Binny was particularly harsh on the off-spinner, creaming him for three fours and two sixes. Finally, Binny ran himself out for 30 (off 17 balls), thus ending his dangerous 53-run (36 balls) partnership with Watson.

Watson carried on for a while, before Pollard got him caught in the deep, inducing a mistimed pull shot. The Australian departed for 45 off 36 balls with four fours and two hits over the fence. Owais Shah and Ashok Menaria got sedate 20s to take RR to 162 for six in their allotted 20 overs. Kulkarni finished with figures of 4-1-18-3, while Lasith Malinga and Kieron Pollard picked up a scalp each.

The Mumbai Indians will now take on the Chennai Super Kings in the playoff eliminator in Bengaluru on May 23, 2012.

Man of the Match: Dwayne Smith for his 58-ball 87 (10x4; 3x6) that helped MI win by 10 wickets

Report:IPL 2012: Match 65 – MI v KKR

After win the Match 65

Lethal Narine helps Kolkata Knight Riders sink Mumbai Indians

Four nights after losing to Mumbai Indians at the Eden Gardens, the Kolkata Knight Riders managed to exact their revenge against the Mumbai franchise by subjecting them to a 32-run defeat. While Rohit Sharma was the star of MI’s win in Kolkata, it was Sunil Narine’s turn to grab the limelight today as the off-spinner finished with figures of four for 15 to help his team defend a modest total at the Wankhede Stadium.

Earlier, KKR struggled to post a total of 140 after being asked by MI skipper Harbhajan Singh to bat first. RP Singh did the initial damage for the hosts as he got an lbw decision against Brendon McCullum (1) in the second over, despite the fact that the batsman had taken a couple of steps outside his crease. However, if there were any doubts regarding McCullum’s dismissal, Singh left no room for question regarding Jacques Kallis’ wicket with his very next delivery. The pacer pegged back the all-rounder’s off stump with a delivery that cut in after pitching. This left KKR wobbling at six for two in 1.3 overs.

Gautam Gambhir hit three fours and even survived a missed catch that went for six in his knock of 27; but he failed to anchor the visitors’ innings with a big score. The KKR captain was bowled by Kieron Pollard in the ninth over with his team’s score at 44. Manoj Tiwary and Shakib Al Hasan then tried to revive KKR’s innings with a 45-run stand that included a couple of big sixes. But with both batsmen falling in the space of six deliveries, KKR found themselves in a tight spot with the score reading 91 for five in 14.1 overs. Even Debabrata Das (2) didn’t help KKR’s cause as he found himself involved in a mix-up with Yusuf Pathan and was run-out. The visitors were 96 for six at the fall of Das’ wicket.

Yusuf Pathan, who has struggled with his form right through the tournament, tried his best to help KKR past a score of 150, and he remained unbeaten on 21. But with Lasith Malinga and RP bowling well at the death, MI restricted KKR to a below par 140 for seven in 20 overs on the evening.

Chasing 141 to win, MI had a slow start with Sachin Tendulkar and Herschelle Gibbs only scoring 20 runs in the first five overs. Iqbal Abdulla then gave KKR their first breakthrough when he had Gibbs (13) bowled off the last ball of the sixth over. Tendulkar (27) tried to up the MI scoring rate after Gibbs’ dismissal with a six and a boundary off Kallis in the ninth over. However, when Sunil Narine broke through the Mumbai legend’s defenses to knock his off stump over, MI were reeling at 60 for two at the end of 11 overs.

With the KKR bowlers continuing to bowl a tight line and the asking rate steadily rising, the hosts were forced to go for the big shots; this only resulted in more wickets falling. Dinesh Karthik (20) was caught at fine leg while attempting a pull shot in the 13th over while Ambati Rayudu (11) was stumped while attempting to hit Shakib Al Hasan out of the park in the 16th.

Any chances of MI still pulling off a win from this stage then disappeared when Kieron Pollard (8) Dwayne Smith (0) were dismissed by Kallis off successive balls in the 17th over. Narine finished the game on a high as he picked up three of the last four wickets to help bowl the hosts out for 108 in 19.1.

The win pushes KKR up to second spot in league standings with 19 points. MI (18 points), on the other hand, slide down to third place. Now, both teams have one game each left in the league stage of the competition.

Full Match Highlights from MATCH03 of IPL 2012 between Mumbai Indians and Pune Warriors played on Apr-06-2012 at Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai
